In a strategic move to bolster Nigeria’s digital transformation, the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), an initiative of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has officially handed over the Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC) to Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, Ogun State. The landmark project is designed to equip students with cutting-edge technological skills, fostering digital innovation, research, and development (R&D) while promoting economic growth.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The ETC is one of USPF’s access projects aimed at addressing the digital divide by expanding access to information and communication technology (ICT). The facility, situated on OGITECH’s campus, is equipped with 100 desktop computers, state-of-the-art emerging technology applications, broadband connectivity, and digital learning tools. It provides a modern platform for students and faculty to engage in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and cybersecurity.

During the inauguration and official handover ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between USPF and OGITECH to ensure the effective utilization and sustainability of the ICT infrastructure. The MoU signifies a commitment to long-term technological advancement within the institution and its surrounding communities.

Strategic Investment in Nigeria’s Digital Future

Speaking at the ceremony, USPF Secretary Yomi Arowosafe emphasized that the ETC represents more than just a physical structure but rather a forward-looking investment in human capital and digital skills development.

“Under the strategic guidance of the Honorable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, USPF is committed to expanding ICT access to Nigeria’s unserved and underserved regions,” Arowosafe stated.

He noted that USPF has implemented various ICT access projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, positively impacting connectivity and digital literacy nationwide.

“With a student population of over 9,300, OGITECH stands as one of Nigeria’s premier technology institutions, and we are honored to collaborate with them. This Centre will not only enhance students’ learning experiences but also serve as a hub for research, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement,” he added.

A Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The ETC is poised to play a crucial role in fostering digital entrepreneurship. According to Arowosafe, the facility will act as an incubation hub for startups and small businesses, enabling young innovators to develop tech-driven solutions and contribute to Nigeria’s digital economy.

“We expect this initiative to create opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate with industry partners, integrate technology into academic research, and build practical skills necessary for today’s digital landscape,” he emphasized.

Commitment to Sustainability and Future Growth

Arowosafe also highlighted that the MoU framework is part of USPF’s broader sustainability strategy. It ensures that beneficiaries take full ownership of ICT projects and implement measures to maintain them beyond the initial handover phase.

Echoing this commitment, the Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, lauded USPF and NCC for selecting OGITECH as the host institution for the ETC. He assured that the facility would be effectively utilized to benefit students, faculty, and the broader community.

“We recognize the immense potential of this Centre and are fully committed to sustaining its operations in line with the MoU. This project will serve as a catalyst for technological innovation in our institution and beyond,” Dr. Oluseye affirmed.

Driving Nigeria’s Digital Inclusion Agenda

USPF, established by the Federal Government of Nigeria, plays a vital role in ensuring universal access to affordable ICT services, particularly in rural and underserved areas. By facilitating initiatives such as the ETC, the Fund advances digital literacy, social inclusion, and economic development.

The inauguration of the Emerging Technologies Centre at OGITECH marks another milestone in Nigeria’s quest for a digitally inclusive society, empowering students with the skills needed to thrive in the global digital economy.
