Aviation Safety in Focus as NSIB Probes Max Air Flight Incident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a full-scale investigation into a flight incident involving a Boeing 737-400 aircraft (registration: 5N-MBD) operated by Max Air at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

According to Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, NSIB, the aircraft, which had 53 passengers and six crew members onboard, was arriving from Lagos to Kano when it encountered a critical moment during landing on runway 06.

At approximately 10:48 PM local time, as the aircraft decelerated below 60 knots with its thrust reversers engaged, a loud bang was heard, followed by a sharp veer to the left. The flight crew responded swiftly, regaining control and bringing the aircraft to a safe stop. Fortunately, all passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries reported.

In line with its mandate, the NSIB deployed a Go-Team to the site to conduct a thorough investigation into the root cause of the incident. The focus will include technical malfunctions, operational factors, and procedural compliance to ensure such occurrences are prevented in the future.

The NSIB has reiterated its commitment to upholding aviation safety and will provide timely updates as the investigation unfolds.
