The unfolding scandal surrounding the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of $6.2 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has once again highlighted the deep-rooted financial misconduct within public institutions. Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the arraignment of Odoh Ocheme and two others, now set for November 3, 2025, after the Federal Government failed to present the accused before the court.

This case, which dates back to February 2023, revolves around an elaborate scheme where the accused—Adamu Abubakar, Imam Abubakar, and Odoh Ocheme—allegedly forged documents from the Presidency and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) to obtain the sum from the apex bank. The money was purportedly meant for settling foreign election observers, but subsequent investigations revealed the fraudulent nature of the transaction.

Despite a warrant of arrest issued a year ago, the accused remain at large, prompting the Federal Government to engage INTERPOL in a global manhunt. Celestine Odoh, counsel to the government, informed the court that efforts to apprehend the suspects had so far been unsuccessful, necessitating a prolonged adjournment.

The case also serves as a flashback to past high-profile financial fraud cases in Nigeria, where individuals exploit bureaucratic loopholes for personal gain. The $6.2 million fraud, reminiscent of similar scandals in public finance, raises serious questions about internal controls within the CBN and the ease with which fraudulent actors manipulate government systems.

As the court postpones proceedings, Nigerians reflect on the broader implications of financial misconduct and the effectiveness of the government’s anti-corruption measures. Will INTERPOL’s involvement lead to the extradition of the fugitives? Or will this case, like many others, fade into legal oblivion? The November 2025 date now stands as a critical moment in determining whether justice will be served or if impunity will once again reign in Nigeria’s financial corridors.
