A Call for Constructive Engagement in the Aviation Sector

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue with aviation unions, urging them to embrace collaboration in addressing industry concerns.

This follows a recent publication by Sahara Reporters titled “Aviation Unions Issue 14-day Ultimatum to Federal Government of Nigeria over Concessions and Salary Review.” The report highlighted grievances expressed by aviation workers regarding their exclusion from the ongoing airport concession committee discussions and delays in implementing the negotiated consequential adjustment of the New Minimum Wage.

During a workers’ congress held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, union representatives voiced these concerns, prompting swift intervention from the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN.

At an interactive session with aviation unions on Friday, February 28, 2025, in Lagos, Minister Keyamo assured stakeholders that their concerns were being taken seriously. He directed the immediate inclusion of union representatives in the concession committee to enhance transparency and ensure their active participation in decision-making.

Furthermore, the Minister pledged to facilitate the immediate implementation of the new salary review for FAAN staff, emphasizing that the government remains committed to improving the welfare of aviation workers.

Reflecting on these developments, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, reiterated the authority’s dedication to its core values, including fostering industrial harmony and maintaining open channels of communication with unions. She emphasized that continuous engagement and mutual understanding remain the best approaches to resolving labor-related issues.

FAAN reassured the flying public that it remains focused on delivering world-class airport services aligned with global best practices. As Nigeria’s aviation sector evolves, the commitment to collaboration between stakeholders is essential in ensuring sustainable growth and operational efficiency.
