In a decisive step toward improving safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated a special committee dedicated to preventing boat mishaps across the country.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Abuja, underscored the government’s commitment to tackling the recurring tragedies that have led to significant loss of lives and property.

Speaking at the event, Oyetola stressed the critical need to curb the alarming rate of boat accidents, emphasizing that Nigeria’s waterways are crucial for transportation, commerce, and economic development. He reaffirmed that ensuring their safety is essential for the success of the country’s blue economy agenda.

“This initiative aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, ‘Navigating the Future: Safety First.’ The task ahead is challenging, but with unwavering commitment, we can eliminate boat mishaps and guarantee safer waterways for future generations,” Oyetola stated.

The committee consists of key stakeholders, including representatives from state governments, the Association of Boat Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts, and academics. It is chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, with Mr. Adams Offie, Deputy Director of Inland Waterways at the Ministry, serving as Secretary.

The committee’s primary responsibilities include conducting an extensive review of commercial boat operations in Nigeria, identifying the root causes of frequent boat mishaps, and proposing sustainable safety solutions.

In his acceptance speech, Oyebamiji assured the Minister of the committee’s dedication to its mission, emphasizing that safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways is non-negotiable. He commended Oyetola’s proactive leadership and reaffirmed NIWA’s commitment to upholding its mandate without compromise.

“This is a solution-driven initiative aimed at eliminating boat mishaps. We recognize the trust placed in this committee and will work diligently to fulfill our mandate. Our focus is on implementing measures that will drastically reduce marine accidents,” Oyebamiji said.

The committee has been given six weeks to complete its assignment and submit its recommendations, marking a crucial step toward ensuring the safety and sustainability of Nigeria’s inland waterways.
