The election of Abdullah Elkurebeh as the President of the Pan African Agricultural Journalists (PAAJ) marks a defining moment in the organization’s history. His emergence signifies not only a personal achievement but also a collective milestone for agricultural journalism in Africa.
For decades, African agricultural journalists have played a pivotal role in shaping discourse around food security, climate resilience, and sustainable farming practices. The formation of PAAJ in 2017 was a response to the urgent need for a unified voice, ensuring journalists had a platform to advocate for agricultural development across the continent.
Elkurebeh’s election is a continuation of this legacy. He follows in the footsteps of Rev. Stanley Ihedigbo (Nigeria, 2017–2021), Daniel Aghan (Kenya, 2021–2022), and Jefferson Massah (Liberia, 2022–2024), each of whom contributed to strengthening the organization.
Reflecting on the past, the journey of PAAJ has been one of resilience and collaboration. From its inception, the association has grown to over 5,000 members, spanning multiple African nations. This network has facilitated knowledge exchange, training programs, and policy advocacy, cementing PAAJ’s role as a key player in Africa’s agricultural transformation.
Now, under Elkurebeh’s leadership, the organization is set to enter a new phase of growth. His vision prioritizes:
- Strengthening cross-border collaboration among agricultural journalists.
- Enhancing capacity-building initiatives to improve reporting on agriculture.
- Elevating the role of agricultural journalism as a force for policy influence and innovation.
Joining him in this mission is a formidable team, including Jean Baptise (Democratic Republic of Congo) as Vice President, Pojoley Essonana (Togo) as Secretary-General, Amadou Jallow (Gambia) as Assistant Secretary, and Been Mujala (Zambia) as Treasurer. Together, they are poised to redefine the role of journalism in Africa’s agricultural transformation.
As the continent faces challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and evolving agribusiness landscapes, PAAJ’s leadership will be crucial in shaping narratives that drive policy reforms, investment flows, and grassroots empowerment.
With Elkurebeh at the helm, the next chapter of PAAJ’s journey promises to be one of renewed dynamism and impact—ensuring that African agricultural journalists not only tell the story of the continent’s farmers but actively shape its future.
