In a decisive move to accelerate the prosecution of corruption-related cases, the Federal High Court of Nigeria has designated 48 justices across its divisions to exclusively handle matters brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This directive, issued by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John T. Tsoho, in a statement dated February 13, 2025, underscores the judiciary’s commitment to expediting trials involving financial crimes, money laundering, and high-profile corruption.
According to the statement, the newly assigned justices will oversee EFCC cases in key divisions, including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Ibadan, and several others nationwide. Among the justices in the Abuja Division are Justices I. E. Ekwo, J. O. Abdulmalik, J. K. Omotosho, Emeka Nwite, M. S. Liman, and H. J. Yilwa.
Lagos, a hub for many financial crime investigations, will see Justices C. J. Aneke, Y. S. Bogoro, D. E. Osiagor, and O. A. Oluseyi presiding over EFCC-related trials. Port Harcourt, Calabar, Asaba, Warri, Yenagoa, and Uyo have also received designated justices to handle corruption cases.
This development follows increasing public frustration over prolonged legal proceedings, adjournments, and allegations of judicial manipulation in politically sensitive corruption cases. While the EFCC has secured some convictions, many cases involving politically exposed individuals have suffered delays or outright dismissals due to technicalities and legal loopholes.
Legal analysts and anti-corruption advocates have lauded the move, emphasizing the need for an independent and swift judicial process that restores public confidence in Nigeria’s fight against corruption. However, concerns remain over the judiciary’s ability to resist political pressure and ensure accountability in high-stakes cases.
With Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts at a critical juncture, the effectiveness of these newly designated justices will be closely scrutinized in the coming months.
