In a landmark effort to uphold quality and enhance global trust in Nigerian products, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), in collaboration with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), convened a crucial stakeholders’ forum on the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP). Held on February 11, 2025, at MAN House, Ikeja, Lagos, the event reinforced the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting “Made-in-Nigeria” products through standardization, quality assurance, and branding.
Opening the forum, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director General/Chief Executive of SON, underscored the role of MANCAP in ensuring that locally manufactured products meet international standards. He emphasized that strict adherence to quality standards is key to economic sustainability, consumer confidence, and global market access for Nigerian goods.
In his remarks, Engr. Akinware Ayodele, Head of MANCAP, highlighted how the programme has evolved over the years, leading to increased compliance, product innovation, and reduced substandard production. He called on manufacturers to embrace certification as a means of enhancing market credibility and boosting exports.
The forum featured key presentations, including:
- Segun Ajayi-Kadir, mni, DG of MAN, who spoke on “The Role of Branding on Standardisation and Quality Assurance,” stressing that a well-branded, quality-assured product commands higher value both locally and internationally.
- Dr. Jide Johnson, Director, Special Programmes, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, who explored “The Nexus between Standardization, Quality Assurance, and Branding,” emphasizing how a strong reputation for quality products translates into greater consumer loyalty and business growth.
- Engr. Enebi Onuchenyo, Director, Product Certification Department, SON, who provided an overview of SON’s certification services and their impact on Nigeria’s economic development, noting that improved standardization has significantly boosted local production, job creation, and industrial expansion.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the new MANCAP logo, symbolizing a renewed drive toward product excellence and regulatory compliance. Industry leaders, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies at the forum applauded SON’s efforts, reaffirming their commitment to quality production and the advancement of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.
Reflecting on past achievements, stakeholders noted that SON’s interventions have led to significant reductions in counterfeit products, enhanced local capacity for export, and improved Nigeria’s reputation in global trade. The forum concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen collaborations, promote compliance, and ensure that Nigerian-made products stand out for quality and reliability in international markets.
