In a landmark event held at the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) House, Ikeja, Lagos, on February 11, 2025, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) convened a Stakeholders’ Forum on the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP)—a pivotal initiative aimed at bolstering confidence in Made-in-Nigeria products. The forum, organized in collaboration with MAN, brought together key industry players, regulators, and experts to deliberate on standardization, quality assurance, and branding as crucial drivers of national economic development.

SON’s Commitment to Innovation and Automation

Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director General/Chief Executive of SON, emphasized the organization’s commitment to automation, ensuring seamless access to its services for manufacturers across Nigeria. He underscored that the SON logo must be visible on every certified product, not only in Nigeria but across global markets, reinforcing the nation’s credibility in international trade.

According to Dr. Okeke, the new certification implementation timeline grants a six-month transition period for existing manufacturers, while new entrants must adopt the rebranded MANCAP logo immediately. “We have re-engineered our standardization processes with cutting-edge technological innovations to enhance quality assurance. Every locally manufactured product must proudly bear the SON rebranded logo, signaling compliance with Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS),” he stated.

MANCAP Reform: A Boost for Local Manufacturing

In his remarks, Engr. Akinware Ayodele, Head of MANCAP, highlighted a significant transformation in certification procedures. He noted that the processing time for MANCAP certification has been drastically reduced, facilitating quicker market access for Nigerian manufacturers. Furthermore, SON has decentralized its operations, establishing seven regional offices, including Abuja, to improve efficiency and stakeholder engagement.

Industry Leaders Call for Dialogue on Implementation

As part of the forum’s key discussions, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, mni, Director General of MAN, delivered a presentation on “The Role of Branding in Standardization and Quality Assurance.” While commending SON’s efforts, he advocated for further dialogue on the rebranded logo implementation, ensuring that manufacturers have sufficient time to align their production and packaging processes.

Additionally, Dr. Jide Johnson, Director, Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, elaborated on “The Nexus between Standardization, Quality Assurance, and Branding.” His insights reinforced the importance of certification in boosting consumer trust, fostering brand loyalty, and promoting Nigeria’s industrial growth.

Unveiling the Rebranded MANCAP Logo

A defining moment of the event was the unveiling of the rebranded MANCAP logo by Dr. Okeke and Mr. Ajayi-Kadir. The launch symbolized a renewed commitment to quality assurance, product competitiveness, and economic sustainability. The excitement among participants reflected widespread industry support for the initiative.

SON Certification: A Catalyst for Economic Growth

In his presentation on “SON Certification and National Development,” Engr. Enebi Onucheyo, Director of Product Certification at SON, outlined the transformative impact of SON’s certification services. He emphasized that MANCAP certification enhances local industry competitiveness, facilitates trade under the AfCFTA, attracts foreign direct investment, and fosters industrial growth.

The event underscored the vital role of SON’s regulatory framework in driving economic diversification, consumer protection, and international market penetration. With its certification schemes, including SONCAP for imports, SONEXCAP for exports, and PAM for product authentication, SON continues to strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and safeguard product quality.

A New Era for Nigerian Manufacturing

As Nigeria seeks to expand its industrial base and increase non-oil exports, the MANCAP reform stands as a bold step toward ensuring quality, standardization, and global competitiveness. The engagement between SON and industry stakeholders at the forum signals a collective resolve to elevate Made-in-Nigeria products to world-class standards.

With the rebranded MANCAP logo now in effect, the next six months will be crucial in ensuring smooth implementation and widespread industry compliance. SON’s vision for a standard-driven economy is now a reality, reinforcing Nigeria’s position in the global trade landscape.
