A Month of Strategic Wins in the Fight Against Smuggling
Barely a month after assuming office, Comptroller Joseph Olugbuyi Adelaja of the Oyo/Osun Area Command has set a remarkable precedent in revenue generation and anti-smuggling operations. His maiden press briefing in February 2025 painted a picture of determination, with the command generating ₦2.04 billion in revenue and recording anti-smuggling seizures worth ₦165.4 million within just 22 days. The figures spoke volumes, but what followed in the weeks ahead cemented his leadership stance—proving that intelligence-driven enforcement could yield even greater results.
In the latest operational report, covering just 17 days, the command seized contraband goods, including foreign parboiled rice, cannabis sativa, used tyres, and second-hand clothing, all valued at ₦468.7 million. A particularly alarming revelation was the concealment of smuggled rice in three heavy-duty trucks, a strategy deployed by economic saboteurs to evade detection. Such activities, Comptroller Adelaja warned, threaten national economic stability and public safety.
Reflecting on the swift successes, it is evident that strategic intelligence-sharing, collaboration with sister agencies, and unwavering support from key stakeholders—including the Customs Intelligence Unit and the Customs Police—were instrumental in these milestones. The firm backing of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, alongside the enabling environment provided by Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, further empowered the command’s operational efficiency.
Beyond the numbers, this period has been a defining chapter in the renewed fight against smuggling in Oyo and Osun states. It is a testament to the resilience and commitment of the officers, whose tireless efforts are reshaping the narrative of border enforcement in the region.
As Comptroller Adelaja rallies stakeholders for continued support, the message to smugglers remains unequivocal—compliance is non-negotiable. The command’s intensified surveillance and enforcement strategy signal a new era where illicit trade finds no refuge. The challenge now is sustaining this momentum, ensuring that each success builds upon the last, fortifying Nigeria’s economic interests against those who seek to undermine them.
With a renewed resolve, the Oyo/Osun Area Command stands poised for greater achievements, proving that strategic enforcement is not just about seizing goods—it is about safeguarding a nation’s economic integrity.
