In February 2025, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) convened a landmark stakeholders’ forum at the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) House in Lagos, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to boosting confidence in locally manufactured goods. The event, held in collaboration with MAN, focused on the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) and its crucial role in promoting product standardization and economic growth.
During his welcome address, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director General/Chief Executive of SON, underscored the importance of technology adoption and enhancing the visibility of the SON certification logo across all trade partner nations. He announced a six-month transition period for existing manufacturers to comply with the newly rebranded logo, while new entrants into production were mandated to adopt it immediately.
Stakeholders, including Engr. Akinware Ayodele, Head of the MANCAP program, and Segun Ajayi-Kadir, mni, Director General of MAN, deliberated on the role of branding in standardization. Ajayi-Kadir emphasized the need for more dialogue and a phased implementation of the new logo to ensure seamless adoption.
A highlight of the forum was a presentation by Dr. Jide Johnson, Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, who explored the nexus between standardization, quality assurance, and branding. His insights shed light on how robust certification processes can position Nigerian-made products for greater competitiveness in both local and international markets.
The unveiling of the rebranded MANCAP logo by SON and MAN leadership marked a defining moment, eliciting excitement among participants. Engr. Enebi Shaibu Onucheyo, Director of SON’s Product Certification Department, provided a comprehensive overview of SON’s certification services and their impact on national development. He emphasized that MANCAP certification is a vital tool for market access, trade facilitation, and industrial competitiveness, aligning with Nigeria’s broader economic diversification goals.
The SON certification framework—encompassing programs like SONCAP, MANCAP, SONEXCAP, and SEZCAP—has been pivotal in eliminating substandard goods, fostering investor confidence, and integrating Nigeria into global trade ecosystems such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
By continuously strengthening its certification processes, SON remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrial growth, reinforcing consumer trust, driving foreign investment, and ensuring that Nigerian products meet the highest global standards. As the new MANCAP logo takes effect, it symbolizes a renewed commitment to quality and innovation, propelling Nigeria’s manufacturing sector towards greater heights.
