The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, has reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to advancing tax policy development and enhancing the capacity of tax administrators across West Africa to boost domestic revenue mobilisation.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) Country Correspondents’ Conference held at the Transcorp Hilton, Adedeji emphasised the critical role of a well-structured tax framework in driving sustainable economic growth through efficient revenue generation.

In a statement issued by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, Adedeji highlighted that improved tax collection, facilitated by enhanced administrative efficiency, would significantly benefit both West African nations and their citizens.

“Nigeria has historically played a leading role in fostering international tax cooperation and has significantly contributed to WATAF’s development by providing technical assistance and capacity-building programs to member states.

“As a nation, we continue to champion regional collaboration in tax administration, acknowledging the need for synergy in addressing common fiscal challenges. Our commitment remains unwavering in supporting initiatives that enhance tax policy and capacity development, not just in Nigeria but across the entire West African region.

“Domestic resource mobilisation is fundamental to economic growth, and I urge all participants to engage actively in discussions, establish valuable professional networks, and apply the knowledge gained to improve our tax systems,” Adedeji said.

He commended WATAF for fostering regional cooperation and strengthening tax administration capacities across the sub-region.

The conference brought together tax officials from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, and host country Nigeria, underscoring a shared commitment to effective tax administration and economic development in West Africa.
