Experts Hail Refinery’s Milestone, Call for Greater Support
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has once again proven its global significance as the United States imports over two million barrels of jet fuel from Africa’s largest refinery. This milestone reinforces Nigeria’s position in the international energy market, as experts laud the refinery’s growing influence and call for continued support.
According to data from ship-tracking firm Kpler, six vessels carrying approximately 1.7 million barrels of jet fuel from the Dangote Refinery arrived at U.S. ports in March. Additionally, another vessel, the Hafnia Andromeda, is set to dock at the Everglades terminal on March 29, delivering about 348,000 barrels of jet fuel.
With a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), the Dangote Refinery has emerged as a formidable player in the Atlantic Basin’s fuel trade, challenging traditional suppliers and reshaping global energy flows.
Boosting Global Competitiveness
This latest shipment to the U.S. follows Dangote Refinery’s recent exports of approximately 130 million liters of jet fuel to Saudi Arabia, a testament to its ability to compete with established European refiners. Industry analysts predict that these jet fuel deliveries could influence pricing dynamics in the world’s largest fuel-consuming nation.
Steven Barsamian, Chief Operating Officer of TankTiger, noted that the influx of Nigerian jet fuel could help stabilize U.S. aviation fuel prices ahead of the peak summer travel season. “With U.S. jet fuel imports averaging 226,000 bpd in March—the highest since February 2023—Dangote’s refinery is playing a crucial role in meeting demand,” he added.
The refinery’s impact is further amplified by temporary supply disruptions in the U.S., such as maintenance-related shutdowns at key facilities like the Phillips 66 Bayway refinery in New Jersey. These disruptions have increased reliance on Dangote’s fuel, highlighting its growing market share in North America.
A Source of National Pride and Economic Growth
Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), hailed Dangote Refinery’s exports to the U.S. as a major win for Nigeria.
“There’s no greater validation of Nigeria’s industrial capability than seeing our refinery supply products to the United States—a market known for its stringent quality standards,” Yusuf remarked. “This is a moment of immense pride, showing that our products can compete on the global stage.”
The former Director-General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) also called for strong government and citizen support for the refinery.
“We should all rally behind the Dangote Refinery, as it is elevating Nigeria’s global standing. The government must prioritize policies that encourage similar industrial ventures, ensuring that Nigeria maximizes its refining capacity,” he said.
Economic and Policy Implications
Public policy expert Dr. Abimbola Oyarinu lamented Nigeria’s historical over-reliance on crude oil exports while importing refined petroleum products, a cycle he believes Dangote Refinery is breaking.
“This should have been done years ago. If we had functional refineries, we wouldn’t be dealing with high inflation, forex scarcity, and unemployment. Dangote’s investment is reversing these trends, yet some vested interests continue to undermine his efforts,” Oyarinu stated.
He further warned that bureaucratic hurdles and hostile business policies could deter future investors from replicating such industrial breakthroughs.
“Dangote Refinery has diversified our economy, showing that Nigeria can export finished products, not just raw materials. However, if investors see the challenges Dangote is facing, will they be willing to invest here?” he asked.
