A Defining Moment for Lagos’ Agro-Industrial Future
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu set the tone for a new era of agro-industrial transformation in Lagos State as he delivered a compelling address at the 10th Agrofood and Plastprintpack Nigeria Conference and Exhibition. Held at the Landmark Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, the event brought together key players from the agribusiness, food processing, packaging, and plastics industries, reinforcing Lagos’ role as the economic powerhouse of West Africa.
A Vision Rooted in Growth and Innovation
Governor Sanwo-Olu captivated the audience with a thought-provoking question: “Do you know that Nigeria is projected to become Africa’s largest consumer market by 2050?” This projection, he emphasized, makes the Agrofood and Plastprintpack Nigeria event not just an exhibition but a crucial platform for shaping the future of Nigeria, Lagos, and Africa at large.
With Lagos already standing as the second-largest economy in Africa, the Governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to driving industrialization, economic diversification, and environmental sustainability through the THEMES+ Agenda. His speech underscored Lagos’ strategic role as an investment hub for agribusiness, food technology, and packaging solutions.
Transformational Initiatives Powering Lagos’ Agro-Economy
Sanwo-Olu highlighted several groundbreaking initiatives aimed at strengthening the agro-industrial sector:
- Lagos Food Systems and Logistics Hub – A 220-hectare facility in Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, designed to revolutionize food storage, processing, and distribution, ensuring efficiency across the entire value chain.
- Imota Rice Mill – The largest rice mill in Sub-Saharan Africa, processing over 32 metric tons daily, significantly boosting food security while generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
- Support for SMEs – Empowering small and medium-sized enterprises in agro-processing and packaging through financing and technical assistance under programs like the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) and Onje Eko Farmers’ Support Programme.
- Sustainability and Waste Management – Lagos leads the way in environmental responsibility through its Circular Economy and Waste-to-Wealth initiatives, with policies banning single-use plastics and promoting recycling for a healthier, more sustainable future.

A Call to Action for Industry Players
Declaring the conference open, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged participants to leverage the event for strategic partnerships, innovation, and sustainable economic growth. He reinforced that Lagos remains the investors’ first choice, thanks to its dynamic business environment and government-backed industrial initiatives.
“As we embark on this journey of agro-industrial transformation, let us work together to build solutions that will secure food production, enhance packaging technology, and promote environmental sustainability—not just for Lagos, but for Nigeria and Africa as a whole,” he said.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Opportunities
The 10th Agrofood and Plastprintpack Nigeria Conference and Exhibition served as more than just a business gathering—it was a defining moment in Lagos’ commitment to agro-industrial excellence. With bold policies, infrastructure investments, and a focus on sustainability, the state is well-positioned to lead Nigeria and Africa towards a prosperous and food-secure future.
As the event concluded, one thing was clear: Lagos is not just a marketplace; it is a catalyst for transformative growth, where innovation meets opportunity.
