The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has paid a deeply emotional tribute to the late Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, describing his passing as the fall of one of Nigeria’s brightest intellectual stars.
Dr. Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s most revered academics, passed away early Sunday morning, as confirmed by his family.
Reflecting on the life and brilliance of the late icon, Dr. Adedeji, through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi, described Olunloyo as a genius in a class of his own—a rare breed of intellect whose legacy is etched in the annals of Nigeria’s academic and cultural history.
“Papa Olunloyo could rightly be described as Nigeria’s Albert Einstein,” Adedeji said. “He was a prodigy—graduating with First Class Honours and earning a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of St Andrews in Scotland at the age of just 26.”
Adedeji recounted his personal interactions with the late scholar, emphasizing how every encounter offered profound wisdom and inspiration. “Each moment with Papa was a masterclass in knowledge. He was a reservoir of insight—not only in Mathematics, where his genius was most evident—but also in Classical Music, especially the compositions of W.A. Mozart, and in Literature, where he could quote Shakespeare at length and connect its themes to real-life experiences.”

In a poignant reflection, Adedeji invoked an African proverb: “When an old man dies, a library burns.” He noted, “With the transition of Dr. Olunloyo, we have indeed lost a library—one filled with encyclopaedic knowledge, wisdom, and an unmatched depth of understanding.”
While acknowledging Dr. Olunloyo’s advanced age, Adedeji expressed that his wisdom and intellect were still of great value to the nation. He extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and admirers of the revered scholar.
Dr. Omololu Olunloyo leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, cultural richness, and intellectual excellence that will continue to inspire generations.
