Notable industrialists and former Presidents of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Oba Otudeko, were conspicuously absent from the Farewell Dinner hosted in honour of retiring members of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) Board of Directors. The high-profile event, held at Harbor Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, was a grand convergence of Nigeria’s financial elite and traditional royalty.
The event, designed to pay tribute to the outgoing board members of NGX Group, was graced by an array of distinguished personalities, including Mr. Oscar N. Onyema, OON, former Group Managing Director of NGX Group; Mr. Emmanuel Ikhazoboh, former Interim Administrator of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE); and Mr. Temi Popoola, the current Group Managing Director/CEO of NGX Group.
Also in attendance were Mr. Abayomi Oluyomi, Honourable Commissioner for Finance, representing the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, the Ooni of Ife; Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, Group Chairman, NGX Group; Prof. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, OON, former Director-General of the NSE; Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, former President of NSE and Chairman of Coronation Group; and Mr. Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The absence of Dangote and Otudeko—two of the most influential titans who once held sway over Nigeria’s capital markets—raised eyebrows among stakeholders, especially given their previous leadership roles within the Exchange. No official reasons were provided for their non-attendance, leaving room for speculation among observers and participants.
Despite their absence, the event celebrated decades of service and transformation within the Nigerian Exchange ecosystem. Emotional tributes, a showcase of achievements, and forward-looking reflections defined the evening, underscoring the NGX Group’s commitment to fostering innovation and leadership within Nigeria’s financial market.
As the NGX prepares for a new chapter, the spotlight remains fixed on the evolving roles of legacy players and the shifting dynamics of influence within the capital market.
