In a bold step to enhance professionalism and reposition the engineering landscape of Nigeria’s energy sector, the Nigerian Institution of Petroleum Engineers (NiPeTE), a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), has officially rebranded as the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers.

This strategic transformation, announced at a media briefing in Lagos, is part of NiPeTE’s broader mission to drive innovation, improve regulatory standards, and align with international best practices in the oil and gas industry.

Addressing journalists, Engr. Prisca Kanebi, Chairperson of the Institute, highlighted that the rebranding is a major milestone that reflects the Institute’s renewed focus on national development through professional engineering excellence.

“We are on a focused and strategic path to contribute more significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth,” Kanebi said.

She noted that the name upgrade has already been approved and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), following extensive consultations across academia and the energy industry.

In another significant development, NiPeTE has secured the approval of the National Technical Board for its certification programmes, and its bill has successfully scaled second reading at the National Assembly. Kanebi confirmed that the date for the public hearing on the bill will be communicated soon.

“This transition to a statutory institute will empower us to engage more constructively with government, industry, and academic stakeholders to shape national policy,” she added.

The Chairperson urged petroleum engineers across Nigeria and in the diaspora to register with the newly rebranded Institute at www.nipete.org.ng, emphasizing that the door is open for professionals seeking to elevate their contributions to the industry.

In response to recent attempts to discredit the Institute’s leadership, Kanebi addressed a disclaimer issued by a dissenting group, asserting that it does not reflect the position of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) or the broader petroleum engineering community.

“The Nigerian Society of Engineers is not a statutory body and has acted only on the limited information available to them. These actions can be revisited as more clarity emerges,” she said.

Kanebi reaffirmed the unity of the Institute’s leadership, stating that the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Executive Committee, and zonal coordinators—both local and abroad—are united in pursuit of the Institute’s vision.

“There’s no internal crisis. These distractions are politically motivated by a few individuals attempting to hijack the system. We remain focused and undeterred,” she stated.

As the Institute undergoes its transformational journey, it unveiled the members of its Executive Committee, led by:
