In a development that underscores Nigeria’s significant strides in maritime security, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reported an attempted sea robbery — the first such incident in Nigerian waters since 2021.
According to Mr. Osagie Edward, Head of Public Relations at NIMASA, officials stationed at the Agency’s C4i Centre detected suspicious activity on Tuesday, April 21, 2025. A Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tanker, MT Sea Panther, was illegally boarded southwest of Brass, Nigeria.
Four unidentified individuals managed to board the vessel, making away with some personal belongings of the crew. Fortunately, all crew members remained unharmed, and the Sea Panther continued its voyage, successfully exiting Nigerian waters without further incident.
The quick response and continued vigilance by NIMASA’s monitoring systems highlight the Agency’s commitment to ensuring the Gulf of Guinea remains safe for international shipping. Mr. Edward confirmed that NIMASA is collaborating closely with relevant security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring those responsible to justice.
This attempted robbery serves as a reminder that, despite years of relative calm since 2021, persistent threats still require unwavering maritime surveillance and cooperation among stakeholders. NIMASA reassured the shipping community and the international maritime industry of its dedication to sustaining Nigeria’s positive security record.
