A wave of relief and excitement swept across Enugu and the entire Southeast region as the Federal Government confirmed that Akanu Ibiam International Airport will reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025—more than a week earlier than expected.

The airport had been temporarily closed after a sudden and alarming rupture appeared on a critical section of the runway, prompting urgent safety concerns. According to Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) acted swiftly, initiating emergency repairs on April 22, with an initial reopening target set for May 6. However, through the relentless dedication of engineers and support teams working around the clock, the repairs were completed well ahead of time.

For many, the closure had brought back memories of past disruptions, stirring anxiety over travel plans, business schedules, and family reunions. But with the successful and early completion of the rehabilitation works, there is now a renewed sense of confidence in the resilience and responsiveness of the airport management.

FAAN extended its heartfelt gratitude to all passengers, airline operators, and stakeholders who showed patience and understanding during the critical repairs. The Authority also apologized for the temporary inconvenience, stressing that every decision was made with the utmost concern for safety.

The resumption of operations not only restores vital air links for the Southeast but also signals a strong commitment to safer, better-managed airports across Nigeria.
