Nigeria’s Tourism & Entertainment Scene Finds a Key Ally in Ethiopian Airlines
Mrs. Firiehiwot Mekonnen, Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria
As Nigeria continues to rise as Africa’s cultural and entertainment powerhouse, Ethiopian Airlines is reinforcing its commitment to promoting tourism and connectivity across the continent. At the heart of this mission is Mrs. Firiehiwot Mekonnen, the newly appointed Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria, whose leadership signals renewed energy in boosting bilateral tourism and trade.
“Nigeria has enormous tourism potential that remains largely untapped,” said Mrs. Firiehiwot. “Ethiopian Airlines is not just a carrier—it’s a connector of African trade, culture, and tourism. We’re here to make it easier for the world to explore Nigeria, and for Nigerians to experience Ethiopia and beyond.”
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, connects more than 60 African cities with an expansive global network, making it a vital link in intra-African travel and commerce. Since 1960, the airline has maintained an unbroken relationship with Nigeria, operating one of its most modern fleets on Nigerian routes.
The airline has played a prominent role in supporting Nigeria’s cultural calendar. From Carnival Calabar to the vibrant ‘Detty December’ festivities, Ethiopian Airlines has offered discounted fares and seamless travel options to make these experiences more accessible to both local and international travelers.
Mrs. Firiehiwot’s return to Nigeria is both strategic and symbolic. With a rich background in tourism and travel management, including her most recent role as the head of ET Holidays, she is well-positioned to amplify the airline’s footprint in Nigeria. Her previous experience includes serving as General Manager in Lagos and leading operations as TSM at the Abuja station, in addition to various European assignments.
Her vision is clear: “We want to elevate Nigeria’s visibility on the global tourism map while encouraging Nigerians to explore the beauty and heritage of other African nations. Travel is not just about movement; it’s about cultural exchange and economic empowerment.”
With the Nigerian entertainment and cultural sectors witnessing exponential growth, Ethiopian Airlines is gearing up to be a strong enabler—connecting people, ideas, and opportunities across borders.
