In a landmark achievement for digital governance, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has emerged as the overall winner (1st place) and third-place finisher at the 2024 Federal Public Service Innovation Competition, beating out 155 entries submitted by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across Nigeria.
Innovation at the Forefront: Carpooling App Wins First Prize
Announced at an award ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday, April 29, and organized by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), NDIC’s winning innovation was a digital carpooling application developed by the Carpooling Team. The platform is designed to reduce transportation costs for federal workers through a smart rideshare system—earning the team the N5 million grand prize and recognition as the competition’s top entry.
Third Place for Perfoma: A Digital Performance Management Suite
Not stopping there, a second NDIC team secured 3rd place, with a N3 million prize for creating Perfoma, a productivity-enhancing digital secretariat. The application streamlines internal processes by allowing staff to create, track, and manage documents, while also monitoring task implementation and output—essentially serving as a fully integrated performance management suite.
Driving Innovation in Public Service
Speaking at the award event, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, applauded the creativity of participants, emphasizing that “Innovation is one of the six key pillars of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025 (FCSSIP 25)”. She encouraged all MDAs to continue aligning with the federal government’s vision of a more dynamic and tech-enabled public service.
NDIC’s Leadership Commends the Spirit of Innovation
Representing NDIC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Bello Hassan, at the event, Mrs. Gwa Uduwak Zachary, Director of Strategy Development, commended the OHCSF for keeping innovation at the center of civil service reforms. She praised the two teams for their creativity and commitment to excellence.
Later, while receiving the award-winning teams, Mr. Hassan described the dual recognition as a “testament to the innovative spirit and professionalism that NDIC nurtures.” He emphasized that NDIC is proud to lead by example in using technology and creative thinking to solve real-world public sector challenges.
A National Model for Innovation-Driven Governance
The NDIC’s standout performance in this federal competition highlights its strategic focus on embedding innovation in public service operations. It also showcases how MDAs can lead digital transformation, improve internal efficiencies, and deliver value-driven governance.
According to Hawwau Gambo, Acting Head of Communications and Public Affairs, “The NDIC remains committed to supporting and scaling homegrown solutions that improve civil service performance and contribute to national development goals.”
