In a decisive move to safeguard public health and uphold consumer rights, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has restated its unwavering commitment to public safety, consumer protection, and the promotion of fair trade practices across the country.
This declaration was made during a high-profile destruction exercise held at SON’s warehouse in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, where substandard products valued at billions of naira were destroyed. The Director General and Chief Executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, was represented at the event by his Special Assistant, Strategic Support, Mr. Manji Pious Lawan.
The items destroyed included stuffed tyres, steel doors, and spark plugs, all of which failed to meet safety and quality standards and posed serious health risks to Nigerian consumers. Dr. Okeke emphasized that the destruction aligns with the agency’s core mandate as outlined in the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which empowers the organization to regulate and enforce standards for goods in the Nigerian market.
“As an agency, we take our responsibility seriously, and today’s action is a clear demonstration of our resolve to rid the market of dangerous, unregulated goods that undermine the safety, health, and security of our citizens,” Okeke stated.
He stressed that the agency will continue to take bold actions against the influx of substandard products, warning manufacturers, importers, and vendors that consumer safety will always remain paramount.
“This is a firm reminder to all stakeholders—from producers to consumers—that SON will not allow substandard goods to thrive in Nigeria. Our goal is to ensure that only quality, certified products are available to the Nigerian public,” he said.
Okeke further noted that the event was not just a destruction exercise, but a powerful message to all those attempting to compromise the integrity of the market: SON is vigilant and resolute in its mission.
“We will continue to identify, seize, and destroy substandard products and hold accountable those who endanger Nigerian lives through their unlawful practices,” he added.
Commending the relentless efforts of the Inspectorate Department and SON officials, he also expressed appreciation to partner agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Customs Service for their continued support in the fight against substandard goods.
Dr. Okeke concluded by reaffirming SON’s dedication to enforcing standards, upholding the law, and prioritizing the health and safety of all Nigerians.
“Let us continue to work together to build a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria,” he urged.
