Carrier secures 14 next-generation jets with options for nine more as part of long-term sustainability and service strategy

In a landmark fleet expansion move, Taiwan’s flag carrier China Airlines has finalized a $11.9 billion order with Boeing for 14 new aircraft from the U.S. aerospace giant’s 777X family. The agreement includes 10 777-9 passenger aircraft and four 777-8 freighters, with additional purchase options for five more passenger jets and four freighters.

Deliveries under the deal are scheduled to begin in 2029, and the order had previously been listed by Boeing without disclosing the customer. China Airlines confirmed the booking today, noting the new aircraft will significantly bolster its long-haul passenger and cargo operations to North America and Europe.

“The advanced technology and features of the 777-9 will provide our customers with the best-in-class flying experience, while the 777-8 Freighter’s range and fuel-efficiency will enable us to maintain a leadership position in air cargo,” said China Airlines Chairman Kao Shing-Hwang.
“This is a significant investment toward our future, and we will rely on the new 777X family to help realize our long-term sustainability goals,” he added.

The Boeing 777X represents the latest evolution of Boeing’s long-range twin-engine aircraft. The 777-9 offers a passenger capacity of up to 426 and a range of 7,285 nautical miles (13,492 km), while the 777-8 variant accommodates up to 395 passengers and extends its reach to 8,745 nautical miles (16,196 km). The 777-8 Freighter model is derived from the latter and is designed to optimize cargo efficiency and range.

Boeing has promoted the 777X as the world’s largest and most fuel-efficient twin-engine jetliner. The aircraft incorporates composite wings with folding wingtips, new GE9X engines, and improved cabin features. It is set to make its commercial debut in 2026 with launch customer Lufthansa.

Since the program’s inception in 2014, Boeing has secured 521 total orders for the 777X across its three variants. This latest China Airlines order reinforces both demand for fuel-efficient widebody aircraft and the airline’s focus on operational expansion and sustainability.

According to the Quick Manufacturing News, the deal also marks a significant vote of confidence in Boeing’s long-haul aircraft amid a shifting global aviation landscape increasingly shaped by cargo demand and next-generation fuel standards.
