The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commissioned a new, state-of-the-art domestic cargo terminal at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos — a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s air freight infrastructure and promote non-oil exports.

The facility was officially unveiled today, May 9, 2025, as part of FAAN’s drive to modernise aviation logistics and support the Federal Government’s economic diversification agenda. The commissioning was performed on behalf of FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, by the Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Joy Agunbiade.

Further disclosed about the event, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, highlighted the significance of the new terminal in streamlining domestic cargo operations and meeting the growing demands of e-commerce and agricultural exports.

“This facility is a major step forward in delivering reliable, efficient, and secure cargo processing in Nigeria. It reduces bottlenecks, supports nationwide businesses, and strategically positions Lagos as a central cargo hub,” she said.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK), through the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services led by Mr. Lekan Thomas.

With its focus on operational efficiency, scalability, and regional connectivity, the facility is expected to attract more freight operators — both national and international — and enhance Nigeria’s global trade competitiveness.

FAAN also disclosed that the Lagos terminal is the first in a series of similar facilities to be developed across key cities including Abuja, Kano, Jos, Niger, and Port Harcourt. The expansion forms part of FAAN’s broader strategic roadmap to decentralise and optimise cargo processing across the country.

This development not only marks a new chapter for Nigeria’s aviation cargo sector but also reinforces FAAN’s commitment to building a robust logistics ecosystem that drives export growth and economic resilience.
