The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to public safety, consumer protection, and fair trade by destroying a large cache of substandard products valued at billions of naira.

The destruction exercise, which took place at SON’s warehouse in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, was supervised by the agency’s Director General and Chief Executive, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Strategic Support, Mr. Manji Pious Lawan.

According to SON, the destroyed items—which included stuffed tyres, steel doors, and spark plugs—were found to be hazardous to health and safety, falling short of acceptable quality standards.

“As an agency, we take our responsibility seriously,” Dr. Okeke stated. “Today’s action is a clear demonstration of our resolve to rid the market of dangerous, unregulated goods that undermine the safety, health, and security of our citizens.”

He explained that the operation is in line with SON’s legal mandate as enshrined in the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which empowers the agency to enforce product standards and ensure that only safe, quality, and certified goods are available in the Nigerian market.

Dr. Okeke urged manufacturers, importers, and retailers to comply with national quality benchmarks, stressing that SON will continue to take bold action to protect Nigerian consumers from counterfeit and unsafe products.

“This is a firm reminder to all stakeholders in the Nigerian market that SON will continue to ensure substandard goods do not have a place in our country. We are dedicated to making Nigeria’s market safer and more reliable.”

He emphasized that the destruction exercise is not merely symbolic, but a strong warning to those who attempt to compromise public welfare by circulating substandard products.

“Today’s event is not just about the destruction of a few products. It is a clear message to all who seek to undermine public safety and disrupt the integrity of the market: SON will not relent in its duty.”

The SON Director General also applauded the relentless efforts of the agency’s Inspectorate Department, as well as the support from key law enforcement bodies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Customs Service.

In closing, Dr. Okeke reiterated SON’s full commitment to its mandate:

“We will continue enforcing the law, protecting the public, and building a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria for all. Let us work together to achieve this common goal.”
