The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria has lauded the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) for its steadfast commitment to corporate governance, ethical leadership, and operational excellence in the country’s financial system.

The commendation came during a courtesy visit by the CIoD Governing Council to the NDIC Headquarters in Abuja, led by the Institute’s President and Chairman of Council, Alhaji Tijjani Borodo.

Borodo praised the NDIC’s achievements in banking supervision, depositor protection, and bank resolution, describing the Corporation as a critical stabilizer of the financial sector. He emphasized that poor corporate governance had been a recurring cause of bank failures and said the NDIC’s strict adherence to ethical standards sets a benchmark for the industry.

“As the leading professional body for directors in Nigeria, we are committed to upholding integrity and sanctioning directors who breach ethical codes,” Borodo said. “Our collaboration with NDIC will focus on building capacity through board inductions, executive leadership programmes, and targeted governance training.”

He added that the visit marked an opportunity to strengthen institutional ties between CIoD and NDIC in fostering accountable leadership across both public and private sectors.

Responding, NDIC Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mr. Bello Hassan, expressed appreciation for the CIoD’s recognition, stating that corporate governance remains central to NDIC’s operational framework and its efforts to build public trust in the banking system.

“We are fully committed to depositor protection and financial system stability. Strong corporate governance is at the heart of that mission,” Hassan said. “We look forward to deepening our partnership with CIoD to promote a culture of ethical leadership within NDIC and the broader financial services space.”

The visit underscored the shared commitment of both institutions to raise standards in governance and leadership, particularly in a time when the financial sector is navigating evolving risks and regulatory expectations.
