The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported an impressive revenue collection of ₦1.75 trillion in the first quarter of 2025, exceeding its target by ₦106.5 billion and marking nearly a 30% increase compared to the same period last year.

While Apapa Port Command in Lagos has historically been the highest revenue generator for the NCS, recent data reveals a shift in dynamics. The Tincan Island Port Command recorded a remarkable ₦347.9 billion in revenue during the first three months of the year. March alone accounted for ₦128 billion, representing a 10.3% growth compared to March 2024.

Onne Port Command in Rivers State also contributed significantly, generating over ₦190 billion in Q1 2025, a 17.12% increase year-on-year. The port remains an essential gateway, particularly for imports related to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

This emerging competition among key ports highlights the NCS’s success in diversifying its revenue streams across multiple commands, reducing reliance on any single port. Enhanced operational efficiency, improved enforcement, and increased trade activities have all contributed to this growth.

The strong first-quarter performance sets a positive tone for the remainder of 2025, reflecting both the vibrancy of Nigeria’s trade sector and the effectiveness of the Customs Service in boosting government revenue.

As the year progresses, industry watchers will be monitoring whether Tincan Island can maintain its lead or if Apapa and Onne ports will reclaim their traditional dominance in revenue generation. Either way, the Nigeria Customs Service continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal position.
