In April 2025, Nigeria’s aviation industry faced a major challenge when the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) went on strike, suspending vital weather services essential for flight operations. In response, Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline, took the decisive step to suspend all its flights nationwide, prioritizing safety over business continuity.
NiMet provides critical real-time weather information such as forecasts, wind patterns, and visibility reports that are crucial for safe flight planning, especially during Nigeria’s rainy season when adverse weather conditions are common. Without these services, flight safety is significantly compromised.
Senator Festus Keyamo SAN, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, underscored the importance of NiMet’s services, stating, “it is unsafe to fly without their services.” His remarks reinforce the essential role meteorological data plays in aviation safety.
International standards also back this stance. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requires the provision of official meteorological services as outlined in Annex 3, ensuring the safety and efficiency of air navigation. Operating flights without access to authorized weather data contravenes these standards and increases operational risks.
While some domestic airlines continued to operate using alternative, unofficial weather sources, the Association of Professional Meteorologists of Nigeria warned against such practices, citing potential dangers. Additionally, insurance policies typically mandate adherence to official protocols, meaning flights relying on unofficial data could face coverage issues.
Though Air Peace’s decision to suspend flights reportedly led to losses estimated at N3 billion, the move drew commendations from international aviation regulators, aircraft lessors, and insurers for placing safety above profit.
Air Peace’s action during the NiMet strike highlights a firm commitment to safety and regulatory compliance, setting a strong example for Nigeria’s aviation sector in a high-risk environment.
