The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has led a delegation of senior officials on a benchmarking visit to the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and improve regulatory practices within the West African sub-region.
The visit, which held recently at the NCA headquarters in Accra, provided a platform for both regulators to share experiences and deepen collaboration on key issues affecting the telecoms and digital economy sectors.
Dr. Maida commended the NCA for its regulatory strides and highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation in tackling shared industry challenges such as spectrum management, cybersecurity, and mobile service quality.
“This benchmarking visit goes beyond information exchange. It signifies our commitment to building a unified digital future for West Africa. Ghana’s innovations in mobile money regulation, SIM registration, and spectrum licensing offer valuable lessons for us in Nigeria,” he said.
The NCC boss noted that Nigeria is currently focused on improving broadband penetration, boosting consumer protection, and creating a regulatory environment that fosters innovation and investment in the ICT space.
Welcoming the delegation, Acting Director General of the NCA, Mr. Edmund Fianko, described the engagement as timely and strategic. He acknowledged Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s telecommunications market and expressed optimism about deeper collaboration between the two countries.
“We are excited to receive our colleagues from the NCC and are eager to share our experiences. The success of our individual regulatory regimes depends on our ability to work together, especially in addressing regional issues like roaming tariffs and digital inclusion,” Fianko stated.
The visit featured presentations from both sides on regulatory frameworks, technical operations, and innovations adopted in each country. The Nigerian team also toured the NCA’s state-of-the-art monitoring and data centers, gaining insight into real-time industry oversight tools employed in Ghana.
Both regulators agreed to explore joint initiatives, including capacity-building programs, research collaborations, and technical exchanges to enhance service delivery and policy development in the telecommunications sector.
The benchmarking visit is seen as a strategic move by the NCC under Dr. Maida’s leadership to embrace global best practices while driving Nigeria’s transition into a fully digital economy.
