Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development is currently hosting the 18th Plenary Session and Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG), which kicked off today in Abuja. The high-level event runs from May 19 to 21, 2025, and brings together aviation ministers, regulators, and key stakeholders from across West Africa.

The Honourable Minister is expected to deliver the keynote address to formally declare the session open, reaffirming Nigeria’s leadership role in shaping aviation policy and cooperation in the sub-region.

Established to strengthen regulatory harmonisation and enhance safety oversight among member states, the Banjul Accord Group has grown into a vital platform for regional collaboration in civil aviation. The Abuja plenary will focus on reviewing the progress made since the previous session, identifying new challenges, and outlining collective strategies for infrastructure development, safety management, and capacity building.

The Minister’s hosting of this event underscores Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to advancing aviation diplomacy and regional integration. It also aligns with the country’s broader agenda to modernise its aviation sector and foster greater connectivity across Africa.

Key topics expected to dominate discussions include digital innovation in air transport, climate adaptation strategies, and the operationalisation of agreements aligned with the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).

As deliberations continue, Nigeria’s position as a regional aviation hub and influencer is once again in sharp focus. Stakeholders anticipate that resolutions from this meeting will further strengthen cooperation and set new benchmarks for the future of aviation in the BAG region.
