Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has been appointed Chairman of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG), a regional aviation body comprising seven West African nations.

The announcement was made during the ongoing BAG Ministerial meeting taking place in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. Keyamo takes over from Alhaji Fandey Turay, the Minister of Transport and Aviation of Sierra Leone.

BAG, established on January 29, 2004, is a coalition of countries including Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Cabo Verde, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The group was formed to promote the safe, efficient, and harmonized development of civil aviation across member states.

Keyamo’s appointment comes as a recognition of his bold and reformative policies in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Since assuming office, he has championed initiatives aimed at enhancing safety standards, improving regulatory frameworks, and fostering regional cooperation in air transport.

Industry observers say his new role will further solidify Nigeria’s leadership in West Africa’s aviation landscape and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader vision for regional connectivity and economic integration.

With Nigeria at the helm, expectations are high for increased collaboration among BAG member states to advance a more unified and resilient aviation sector in the region.
