Continental Reinsurance Group has unveiled a strategic leadership transition as part of its ongoing evolution into a pan-African holding company focused on growth and governance.

At the group level, Lawrence Nazare, former Managing Director and CEO of Continental Reinsurance Plc Nigeria, has been promoted to Group Managing Director of Continental Reinsurance Holdings, based in Botswana. Nazare will now oversee the group’s operations across Africa and lead its long-term strategic initiatives.

Joining the group board are two key non-executive directors: Paul Kokoricha, former chairman of the Nigerian entity, who now chairs the group board, and Steve Iwenjora, previously a non-executive director in Nigeria. Kokoricha praised the group’s progress, saying, “We achieved significant milestones in Nigeria, and I look forward to supporting Continental Re’s wider pan-African ambitions.”

Nazare added, “Leading the Nigeria business was a privilege. I am now focused on driving our strategic vision across the continent.”

In Nigeria, Dr. Fatai Kayode Lawal has been named Managing Director and CEO of Continental Reinsurance Plc effective April 2025. Dr. Lawal brings extensive industry experience, having led Sterling Assurance Nigeria Ltd from 2007 to 2023, successfully integrating merging companies and expanding market reach. He also previously headed Universe Reinsurance Co. Ltd, improving profitability and growing business lines.Dr. Fatai Kayode Lawal, Managing Director and CEO of Continental Reinsurance Plc (Nigeria)

Dr. Lawal’s academic credentials include a B.Sc. and MBA from the University of Lagos, and a Doctorate in Management from the University of Phoenix. He is a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Chartered Insurance Institutes of London and Nigeria.

The Nigerian board has also been strengthened with three new non-executive directors: Segun Adebanji, a finance veteran and current chairman of Fidson Healthcare Plc; Funmilayo Omokhodion, a seasoned reinsurance expert with 36 years’ experience and former Africa Re Regional Director for West Africa; and Eno Atoyebi, CFA, an investment management specialist and managing director of ValuAlliance Asset Management.

These changes coincide with Continental Re’s 40th anniversary — a milestone highlighting the group’s resilience and its readiness to deepen its presence in Africa’s reinsurance market.

With a refreshed leadership team at both the group and country levels, Continental Reinsurance is well-positioned to accelerate growth and enhance its impact across the continent.
