A delegation of Nigerian football legends and Air Peace Ambassadors on Wednesday paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Christian Chukwu, MFR, in Enugu, honouring the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football icons.

The delegation, led by former Green Eagles captain and Olympian Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, included distinguished veterans from Nigeria’s football history — among them, members of the 1976 Montreal Olympic team, the 1980 African Cup of Nations-winning squad, and the revered 1994 Super Eagles team which Chukwu once coached.

Notable figures on the trip included Dr. Felix Owolabi (MON), Dr. Bruce Ijirigho, Dr. Godwin Obasogie, Mr. Charlton Ehizuelen, Mr. Uche Okechukwu (MON), Sylvanus Okpala (MON, OON), and Mr. Frank Onwuachi (MON). They were received by Chukwu’s widow, children, and extended family.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Dr. Femi Adegbite described the visit as a symbolic act representing three generations of Olympians and national footballers — all united by their admiration for Chukwu. He noted that the visit was made possible by the Chairman of Air Peace, Dr. Allen Onyema, who fully sponsored the trip.

“Dr. Onyema has once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to national icons. Two years ago, he honoured Nigerian Olympians in Lagos in a way never before seen. This condolence visit continues that legacy of respect and recognition,” Adegbite said.

The delegation conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of Dr. Onyema’s continued support, alongside that of the wider community of ex-footballers and Olympians. They also pledged to assist in the planning of Chukwu’s final rites and to help sustain the legacy he left behind.

The group also paid a courtesy visit to veteran goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala (MON), a close associate of the late Chukwu. A possible visit to the Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, was also under consideration as part of the day’s engagements.

Christian Chukwu, widely known by his moniker “Chairman,” was a former captain and coach of the Nigerian national team. He is remembered not only for his exploits on the pitch but for his enduring influence on generations of Nigerian footballers.

His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian football, and Wednesday’s condolence visit underscored the deep respect and admiration he earned throughout his lifetime.
