“NIMASA IS DELIVERING REAL PROGRESS”—Comrade Bunu
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has thrown its weight firmly behind the country’s bid to return to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, praising the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for its role in strengthening safety and stability in the Gulf of Guinea.
Speaking in Lagos over the weekend, MWUN President General, Comrade Francis Bunu, described NIMASA’s efforts as “remarkable” and a major boost to investor confidence in Nigerian waters.
“We now enjoy peace on our waters — a testament to NIMASA’s relentless commitment. This progress not only secures our shores but also helps grow our blue economy and create employment for our people,” Bunu said.
He pledged the Union’s full support in securing international backing for the country’s IMO Council bid, emphasizing that Nigeria’s expertise, experience, and strong leadership make it a powerful contender.
“Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council is long overdue. A vote for Nigeria is a vote for Africa’s representation at a key global platform,” he added.
Bunu also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry — a policy move he described as forward-thinking — noting its potential to unlock investment and foster employment across the sector.
“The new Ministry signals a decisive step forward. It aligns with global trends and prepares us to maximize our vast blue resources while developing skills and opportunity for our youth.”
Reaffirming MWUN’s continued readiness to collaborate with stakeholders, Bunu pledged to foster industrial peace and sustained growth in the sector.
“MWUN will continue to work alongside all stakeholders to enable a thriving, responsible, and safe maritime industry for the collective good of our country.”
Looking toward the 2025 Day of the Seafarer — themed “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”— Bunu stressed the crucial role seafarers play in growing world trade and securing the future of the blue economy.
“MWUN stands firmly in support of seafarers’ rights, decent working conditions, and responsible management of our ocean resources. Our seafarers deserve our greatest recognition and protection for their immense contributions to the industry and the country’s well-being.”
