The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has directed its tax offices to remain open on weekends for the rest of June, in a move aimed at helping companies meet their filing obligations before the deadline.
FIRS Executive Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, issued the directive to ease the filing process and enable taxpayers to avoid penalties, according to a statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman.
Starting from June 14 and running through June 29, FIRS offices will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.
The weekend service is designed to aid companies — especially those whose financial year ends on December 31 — in filing their annual income tax returns by June 30.
In a joint directive, FIRS’ Coordinating Directors — Ms Amina Ado (Large Taxpayers Group), Dr Dick Irri (Government and Medium Taxpayers Group), and Mr Kabir Abba (Emerging Taxpayers Group) — formally notified all FIRS staff about the new policy.
“As you are aware, the month of June marks the peak of the annual Companies Income Tax filing season, with many taxpayers expected to submit their returns by June 30. To ease the process for taxpayers, enhance service delivery, and maximize tax collection during this critical period, FIRS’ management has approved weekend operations for the rest of June 2025,” their directive explained.
Adedeji, upon assuming office, reorganized FIRS’ operations, turning the institution from a mere revenue-collection entity into a service-oriented organization — a transformation aimed at strengthening compliance while delivering greater value to taxpayers.
