Distribution Begins at Local Government Level as Initiative Aims to Cushion Rising Food Prices

The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has donated 10,000 bags of 10kg rice to aid vulnerable families in Enugu State as part of its ongoing National Food Intervention Programme.

The delivery ceremony was held over the weekend at Michael Okpara Square in Enugu, where representatives from the state’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) came together to collect their respective allocations for subsequent distribution.

The Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Legal Matters, Mr. Osinachi Nnajieze, stressed that the food aid is meant exclusively for the most vulnerable in the community.

He explained that each LGA is expected to receive at least 588 bags of rice, adding: “We are determined to be equitable and diligent in the distribution process. None of us is indigent as the people we are targeting — which is the intent of the donor, Aliko Dangote Foundation — and in keeping with the principles of our government.”

Nnajieze further cautioned against hoarding or diverting the palliative to friends or relatives, stating: “We will make sure it reaches the people who need it most.”

Mr. Okechukwu Ede, chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in Enugu, commended the generosity of Aliko Dangote and assured stakeholders that the aid would be distributed fairly. “Not a single local government will be shortchanged in this process,” he said.

A staff from the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, Peace Daniel, who was recording and monitoring the delivery, explained that each LGA was, in fact, receiving 538 bags of 10kg rice.
Mose Anu, a representative of Nkanu West Local Government, who came to collect their allocation, also confirmed the delivery of 538 bags, noting that subsequent distribution will be scheduled by their respective LGAs.

Meanwhile, trucks were seen loading the food palliative for delivery across the state’s 17 LGAs.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation — founded by Africa’s leading industrialist, Aliko Dangote — is currently donating over 1 million bags of 10kg rice, valued at N15.5 billion, to vulnerable families across all 774 LGAs in the country. The Foundation is collaborating with state governments and credible non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to make sure aid reaches those most in need.
