Dangote’s Jet A1 Rollout Takes Off in July; FAAN Key to Success

Nigeria’s aviation industry is on the cusp of a major operational shift as the Dangote Group gears up to begin the direct distribution of Jet A1 aviation fuel starting July 2025. The initiative is expected to address longstanding fuel supply challenges and potentially reduce the high cost of air travel in the country.

The strategy, which will see Jet A1 delivered directly from the Dangote Refinery to airports using CNG-powered tankers, aims to eliminate multiple intermediaries in the current distribution chain — a system often blamed for delays, scarcity, and inflated fuel prices. Industry analysts say the move could be a game-changer for airlines battling rising operational costs.

FAAN’s Role: A Crucial Enabler

At the centre of this effort is the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), whose role as the manager of all federal airport infrastructure makes it instrumental in the rollout. FAAN is expected to allocate fuel storage spaces, facilitate tanker access, and ensure smooth integration of the new supply lines within airport environments.

“Without FAAN’s full collaboration, the plan may struggle to take off,” one senior aviation consultant told reporters. “FAAN controls the physical environment — from apron space to fire safety facilities — and this gives it far more influence than any other agency in this equation.”

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), while also involved, is expected to focus on regulatory compliance and safety standards, leaving the bulk of infrastructure and logistics oversight to FAAN.

A Solution to Persistent Fuel Crisis

Nigeria’s aviation sector has faced repeated setbacks linked to Jet A1 shortages and price volatility, contributing to flight cancellations, route suspensions, and surging airfares. With Jet A1 accounting for over 40% of airline operating costs, a more efficient supply model could significantly ease the financial pressure on domestic carriers.

By cutting transportation delays and reducing reliance on costly storage depots, Dangote’s direct-to-airport model is designed to improve turnaround times and stabilize pricing.

“The expectation is that fuel will become more readily available at a lower landed cost,” said a senior executive from one local airline. “That might not immediately translate to cheaper fares, but it will definitely create breathing space for operators.”

Infrastructure and Readiness

FAAN’s involvement goes beyond mere space allocation. The agency must ensure that:

  • Jet A1 storage infrastructure meets capacity and safety requirements.
  • Access roads within airports can accommodate regular tanker traffic.
  • Operational coordination with ground services and emergency responders is seamless.

Sources say FAAN is already working with the Dangote team to address these issues ahead of the July launch date, with some airports reportedly undergoing internal reviews and facility upgrades.

Long-Term Impact

Though immediate airfare reductions may not be visible in July, stakeholders remain optimistic that the direct fuel distribution strategy will:

  • Reduce airline delays and cancellations.
  • Foster a more stable pricing environment.
  • Create the conditions for long-term ticket price moderation.
  • Enhance competitiveness in Nigeria’s domestic aviation market.

The aviation sector will be watching closely as July approaches. With Dangote’s entry into the fuel logistics chain and FAAN’s operational support, this could mark the beginning of a more resilient and efficient aviation fuel ecosystem in Nigeria.

Looking Ahead: July and Beyond

With the strategy scheduled to take effect in July 2025, stakeholders across aviation, oil & gas, and logistics are watching closely. For the Dangote Jet A1 fuel strategy to deliver on its promise, the active, efficient, and collaborative involvement of FAAN will be central to its rollout and sustainability.

If executed effectively, this could mark the beginning of a more efficient and self-reliant aviation fuel ecosystem in Nigeria — offering long-term benefits to airlines, passengers, and the economy at large.
