In a bold move to promote insurance literacy and deepen industry engagement with the Nigerian public, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) on Saturday hosted a live radio broadcast as part of activities marking Insurance Week 2025.
The special programme, themed “Insurance for All: Securing Nigeria’s Future,” aired live on Radio Nigeria Abuja from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and featured leading voices in the insurance industry.
Top industry figures who joined the broadcast included Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, Director General of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA); Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Deputy Commissioner for Insurance, NAICOM.
The broadcast focused on increasing public understanding of insurance as a tool for economic protection and national development. It also served as a platform to engage listeners on the importance of various insurance products and how they apply to everyday life.
According to the program banner emphasized the urgency of making insurance more accessible and understood by all Nigerians.
“The 2025 theme isn’t just a slogan. ‘Insurance for All’ is a strategic call to protect lives and livelihoods. We’re working to build a culture where insurance becomes second nature to every Nigerian household,” the deputy commissioner said.
Listeners phoned in with questions ranging from motor and health insurance to agricultural and micro-insurance schemes. The experts provided practical insights and clarified common misconceptions around policy coverage, claims processing, and the role of insurers and regulators.
Mrs. Ilori highlighted ongoing industry reforms aimed at simplifying insurance products and making them more inclusive.
“We are seeing a shift from traditional insurance to innovative, customer-focused solutions – designed for farmers, traders, artisans, and SMEs,” she noted.
Mr. Gam-Ikon stressed the importance of outreach and public communication in achieving mass adoption.
“If people don’t understand it, they won’t buy it. This is why platforms like this radio broadcast are critical – we must take insurance directly to the people,” he said.
The two-hour segment forms part of NAICOM’s broader campaign to increase penetration of insurance in Nigeria, particularly at the grassroots level. It also aligns with government goals of improving financial inclusion and strengthening disaster resilience through risk management solutions.
The #IW2025 campaign continues throughout the week with a series of public engagements, policy dialogues, and awareness programmes aimed at repositioning the insurance sector as a key driver of national stability and economic growth.
