Nigerian Breweries Plc has officially opened entries for the 11th edition of its prestigious Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, an initiative aimed at recognizing and rewarding exceptional educators across Nigeria. The call for entries was announced during a flag-off ceremony held in Lagos on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Submissions are open from now until Friday, August 22, 2025.

Established in 2015 and funded by the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, the competition celebrates outstanding teachers in both public and private secondary schools, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education. Interested teachers can enter by visiting the competition’s official website, www.maltinateacheroftheyear.com, to complete the application form online. Alternatively, they may download, fill, scan, and email the form to maltinateacheroftheyear@heineken.com. Speaking on behalf of Nigerian Breweries’ Managing Director, Hans Essaadi, the Corporate Affairs Director, Uzodinma Odenigbo, reaffirmed the company’s enduring commitment to celebrating the teaching profession. He acknowledged the crucial support from key sponsors — Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Air Peace, and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) — whose partnership, he noted, has sustained and expanded the initiative over the years. “We are encouraged by the growing number of entries, the deepening involvement of our partners, and the increasing engagement from government bodies. These signs affirm that our collective efforts to elevate the teaching profession in Nigeria are bearing fruit,” Essaadi said. The launch event also featured remarks from Sarah Agha, Marketing Director at Nigerian Breweries Plc, who highlighted Maltina’s longstanding mission to nourish lives and spread happiness. “No one deserves more happiness than our teachers—the unsung heroes shaping the future of our children,” she said. According to Odenigbo, this year’s grand prize includes:

  • A trophy,
  • A ₦10 million cash prize,
  • International capacity development training, and
  • A ₦30 million infrastructure project for the winner’s school.

The first runner-up will receive ₦5 million, while the second runner-up gets ₦3 million, in addition to trophies. Each state champion will receive ₦1 million and a recognition plaque. Education sector stakeholders present at the event — including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) — commended the NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust for its consistent investment in educational advancement. They pledged their continued support to boost participation in the competition. The Maltina Teacher of the Year competition has become one of the most impactful education-focused initiatives in Nigeria, generating stories of transformation, community impact, and national pride. Through this initiative, Nigerian Breweries continues to drive its broader commitment to sustainable development and educational excellence.
