The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing upgrade of the Safe Tower at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, as the project nears completion.
During an inspection visit to the airport, Anosike assessed the installation of critical meteorological equipment, including ceilometers, transmissometers, lightning and thunderstorm detection systems, and automatic weather stations. The project also features the full solarisation of the systems to guarantee uninterrupted power supply.
Speaking after touring the five equipment sites on the airside of the airport, the NiMet boss commended the contractors and representatives of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the quality of work delivered so far. He noted that the upgrade was 90 percent complete as of the end of July 2025.
The Safe Tower, initially installed about 20 years ago, plays a key role in supporting air traffic safety with real-time meteorological data. The current upgrade replaces the ageing MIDAS IV system with the advanced AVIMET system, aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of air navigation in line with international aviation standards.
Professor Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to improving aviation safety through cutting-edge meteorological solutions, noting that the upgrade would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s compliance with global best practices in weather observation and reporting for the aviation sector.
