Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has reinforced its sustainability agenda by hosting a high-profile symposium on plastic pollution and rolling out a recycling initiative in secondary schools, in commemoration of World Environment Day 2025.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), the bank convened industry leaders, environmental experts, and key stakeholders at the Lekki Conservation Centre for a symposium themed “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event tackled the growing environmental and economic challenges posed by plastic waste and explored innovative solutions to create a cleaner, healthier planet.

Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, highlighted the institution’s dedication to sustainability, saying:
“At Union Bank, our approach to sustainability extends beyond financial services. We are committed to equipping communities with tools and knowledge that inspire positive environmental action, such as recycling to reduce plastic pollution.”

The bank complemented the symposium with an outreach programme targeting Lagos secondary schools. Through this initiative, Union Bank donated recycling bins and educated students on the importance of environmental preservation, nurturing the next generation of sustainability advocates.

Both efforts fall under the bank’s UnionCares platform, its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework driving community development and social impact projects across Nigeria.

With these actions, Union Bank continues to strengthen its leadership in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for sustainable development in Nigeria.
