How Zenith Bank Tops Nigeria’s Tier-1 Capital Ranking for 16th Straight Year?

Zenith Bank Plc has once again reinforced its leadership position in Nigeria’s financial services sector, emerging as the Number One Bank in the country by Tier-1 Capital for the 16th consecutive year. The latest ranking was published in the 2025 Top 1000 World Banks’ report by The Banker, the renowned publication of the Financial Times Group, United Kingdom.

The bank maintained its position as the highest-ranked Nigerian bank globally, securing the 581st spot with a Tier-1 Capital of $2 billion. This reflects Zenith Bank’s sustained financial strength and market leadership in a competitive and evolving banking landscape.

Commenting on the achievement, Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank Plc, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, attributed the milestone to the bank’s robust financial results, effective risk management practices, and an enduring commitment to creating value for its customers and stakeholders.

“This recognition is a reflection of our strong fundamentals, customer-centric approach, and dedicated workforce. We are grateful to our customers for their loyalty and to our board for their strategic guidance,” Umeoji stated.

She also credited the bank’s Founder and Chairman, Jim Ovia, for his visionary leadership, which she described as instrumental in building Zenith Bank into a leading financial powerhouse. She further acknowledged the board’s role in promoting sound corporate governance, which has been central to the bank’s growth story.

Strong Financial Performance in 2024

Zenith Bank’s financial performance in 2024 demonstrated significant growth. Gross earnings rose by 86%, reaching ₦3.97 trillion, while profit before tax (PBT) increased by 67% to ₦1.3 trillion. The bank declared a total dividend of ₦195.67 billion, amounting to ₦5.00 per ordinary share, underscoring its commitment to rewarding shareholders.

Zenith Bank has consistently earned recognition for its operational excellence. It was named Bank of the Year (Nigeria) in The Banker’s Bank of the Year Awards for 2020, 2022, and 2024, and Best Bank in Nigeria in the Global Finance World’s Best Banks Awards for 2020 to 2022 and 2024.

The Tier-1 Capital ranking, which evaluates banks’ financial strength based on core capital elements such as common stock, disclosed reserves, and retained earnings, is a widely respected global benchmark of financial health and stability.
