In a significant move to address climate change through education, the African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have signed a $1.5 million partnership agreement aimed at empowering young Nigerians with climate education and green skills.
The agreement, signed at Africa Re’s headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, will see the corporation commit the funds over a five-year period to support UNICEF’s climate education initiatives. The partnership is expected to benefit over 4.8 million children and young people, particularly those living in regions most vulnerable to climate-related disasters.
Speaking at the event, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, described the partnership as a joint effort to equip children with tools to take action against climate change.
“This partnership with Africa Re reflects our shared commitment to building a more climate-resilient future for children and young people,” Munduate said. “By supporting climate change education, we are giving young people the tools to protect themselves, lead action in their communities, and contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable Nigeria.”
The initiative will strengthen climate-resilient education through digital learning platforms such as the Nigeria Learning Passport and the Youth Marketplace Agency (YOMA). It will also support teacher training, school infrastructure development, and youth-led climate projects across the country.
Representing Africa Re’s Group Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Corneille Karekezi, Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer Elect, Mr. Kiiza Bichetero, said the initiative aligns with the corporation’s vision of fostering sustainable development in Africa.
“Africa Re is proud to support this noble initiative. By empowering young people through climate change education and green skills development, we are helping them to become active contributors to climate solutions and sustainable growth,” Bichetero stated.
The partnership builds on UNICEF’s existing collaboration with the Nigerian government to integrate climate change into education policies, teacher training, and curriculum development.
Beyond classroom learning, the agreement includes plans for storytelling campaigns, media engagements, and field visits designed to highlight the positive impact of the initiative and give visibility to youth-led climate action.
The collaboration comes at a time when Nigeria faces increasing threats from climate change, including severe flooding, droughts, and extreme heat, particularly in vulnerable states. By providing young people with education and skills, the partnership aims to prepare them for careers in the emerging green economy while building resilience in their communities.
Africa Re, a leading reinsurance company on the continent, has a longstanding commitment to supporting economic development in Africa, particularly through strengthening the insurance and reinsurance industry.
UNICEF continues to champion the rights and welfare of children worldwide, with a focus on reaching the most vulnerable communities.
