The 25th edition of the MILO Basketball Championship wrapped up in spectacular fashion at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, with Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State, and Government Secondary School (GSS) Karu, FCT, emerging as national champions in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.

The championship, which drew participation from over 13,000 schools nationwide this year, has grown to become Nigeria’s premier grassroots basketball platform, promoting youth development and sporting excellence for a quarter of a century.

Father O’Connell Science College sealed their third national title after a hard-fought 66–64 win over Bishop Dimeari Grammar School, Yenagoa, Bayelsa, in the boys’ final. Meanwhile, in the girls’ category, GSS Karu finally broke their long-standing jinx. After finishing as runners-up on three previous occasions, they secured a well-deserved 55–42 victory over Lanreleke Sports Academy, Ile-Ogbo, Osun State, claiming their first-ever national crown.

The event was more than just a contest; it was a celebration of resilience, mentorship, and the power of sport to transform lives.

Speaking during the finals, Boladale Odunlami, Commercial Manager, Nestlé Nigeria Plc, who represented the Managing Director and CEO, Wassim El-Husseini, praised the athletes and coaches for their commitment to excellence. “For 25 years, we have remained committed to growing champions through sport. Some of these young athletes have gone on to compete on the world stage, earning scholarships and professional careers,” he said.

Odunlami cited the achievements of Rueben Abuchi, now an NCAA National Champion with the University of Florida Gators, and Murjanatu Musa, recently drafted into the WNBA and currently playing for the Phoenix Mercury, as examples of how the championship has shaped future stars.

Also speaking at the event, Ifeanyichukwu Orabuche, Category Manager, Beverages, Nestlé Nigeria, noted that the championship has become a critical platform for young Nigerians to build confidence and resilience. “This is more than a competition. It’s about equipping young people with the mindset and discipline to succeed beyond the court,” he said.

As part of its inclusive vision, this year’s tournament featured a special match for young people with disabilities, reinforcing Nestlé’s commitment to providing opportunities for all, regardless of ability.

Both Father O’Connell Science College and GSS Karu were awarded trophies, full basketball kits, cash prizes, and MILO products, etching their names in the history of the championship’s 25-year legacy.

Since its inception, the MILO Basketball Championship has empowered hundreds of thousands of young athletes across Nigeria, advancing Nestlé Nigeria’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles, build talent, and nurture future leaders both on and off the court.
