The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has honoured Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), with the prestigious Media Supporter Award, in recognition of his steadfast support for press freedom and the advancement of journalism in Nigeria.
The award was presented during the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary Celebration held at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Conference Centre, Abuja, on June 21, 2025.
In his leadership role at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Akutah has been widely acknowledged for fostering transparency and maintaining open channels of communication between his organisation and the media. His tenure has seen increased engagement with journalists covering the maritime, shipping, and logistics sectors, providing timely information and supporting the media’s role in promoting accountability and economic development.
According to the NUJ, the recognition highlights Dr. Akutah’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for journalists to perform their duties without fear or favour. The union noted that his consistent support for the press underscores the importance of public institutions working collaboratively with the media to strengthen democratic values.
Media practitioners who cover the activities of the Shippers’ Council have repeatedly praised the Council’s responsiveness and openness under Dr. Akutah’s leadership. Many describe his approach as one that values the role of the media in educating the public and shaping informed discourse on national economic issues.
The NUJ’s 70th anniversary provided a platform to celebrate not only the resilience and contributions of journalists over the decades but also the individuals and organisations that have stood in defence of media freedom.
As Nigeria continues to build stronger democratic institutions, the partnership between public service leaders and the media remains critical. Dr. Akutah’s recognition, observers say, serves as an example to other government officials on the importance of supporting press freedom as a pillar of good governance.
The ceremony concluded with renewed calls for public and private sector leaders to see the media as partners in national progress, not adversaries.
