The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has received high-level recognition from the Public Accounts Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives for its outstanding commitment to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and compliance with audit requirements.

The honour was conferred at the National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance, held recently in Abuja. The event brought together lawmakers, anti-corruption agencies, civil society organisations, and public finance experts to discuss ways to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal governance framework.

Leaders of the two Committees, in their remarks, commended the NPA for setting a high standard in financial reporting and audit compliance within the public sector. They described the award as a symbol of the Authority’s institutional integrity and dedication to public accountability.

“The Authority’s contributions were pivotal in making this policy dialogue a reality,” the Committees stated. They further praised the NPA’s proactive support for audit processes and its strategic role in fostering transparency and openness in government financial operations.

The recognition reflects the NPA’s consistent efforts in recent years to build a culture of financial discipline and accountability. The Authority’s leadership has implemented reforms that align its financial management practices with both national and international standards.

The Managing Director of the NPA, Dr Abubakar Dantosho, received the award on behalf of the agency, affirming its commitment to deepening reforms and entrenching openness in its operations.

He was represented by the Executive Director Finance and Administration, Vivian Richard Edet, who received the award on behalf of the Authority.

Observers in the maritime and finance sectors have noted that the NPA’s transparency initiatives have positioned it as a benchmark for other government agencies, particularly in an era where public confidence in the management of government resources remains critical.

Analysts believe this recognition reinforces the importance of strong leadership and robust systems in driving public sector reforms. They emphasise that, beyond facilitating maritime trade, the NPA has emerged as a leading example of how government institutions can earn public trust through transparency and sound fiscal management.

The award comes at a time when fiscal governance is receiving renewed attention in Nigeria’s efforts to improve public sector performance and revenue management. The NPA’s example, stakeholders say, demonstrates that accountability is not merely a regulatory requirement but a critical component of effective governance.

With this honour, the Nigerian Ports Authority is being called upon to sustain and deepen its accountability practices, ensuring that transparency remains a core part of its operational culture.
