The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing his passing as a significant loss to the nation and the industrial sector.

In a statement issued by the President of MAN, Otunba Francis Meshioye, OFR, the association extended condolences to Buhari’s family, close associates, and Nigerians across the country.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, associates, and all Nigerians during this solemn time,” Meshioye said.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, returned as a civilian president in 2015 and led the country until 2023. His administration was marked by significant efforts to promote economic diversification, improve infrastructure, and strengthen the manufacturing sector.

Despite facing economic challenges, the Buhari administration maintained engagement with the private sector, including regular consultations with MAN. According to the association, President Buhari was receptive to proposals that aimed to address the constraints hindering the performance of the manufacturing industry.

“Though the economy experienced difficulties during his tenure, President Buhari granted the Association audience to proffer solutions to mitigate the binding constraints that limited the performance of the manufacturing sector,” the statement read. “He also provided solutions to some of the challenges confronting manufacturers.”

MAN acknowledged that while the economic terrain remained tough, Buhari’s administration helped lay a foundation for industrial growth by drawing attention to manufacturing as a key driver of job creation and national development.

As the country reflects on Buhari’s leadership and public service, MAN is urging Nigerians to honour his memory by building on the policies that encouraged industrial development.

“We must reflect on his achievements and recommit ourselves to advancing manufacturing in Nigeria,” Meshioye said. “The government should take stock of the lessons from his policies and strengthen efforts to build a robust industrial base for the future.”

MAN emphasized that sustainable economic growth depends on a strong and vibrant manufacturing sector. The association called on the federal government to recommit to creating a conducive environment for industrialization as part of Buhari’s lasting legacy.

President Buhari died earlier this week at the age of 82. His burial arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
