Nigeria has officially declared its intention to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, joining a growing list of African nations vying to bring the prestigious motorsport event back to the continent.
The proposed host city is Abuja, the nation’s capital, which the government and private sector stakeholders believe has the infrastructure and ambition to stage a world-class F1 event.
This move places Nigeria in direct competition with Morocco, Rwanda, and South Africa, all of whom have expressed interest in securing future Formula 1 races as the sport looks to expand into new and diverse markets.
Formula 1 has not held a race in Africa since 1993, when the South African Grand Prix was last staged at the Kyalami circuit. Since then, calls for the sport’s return to the continent have intensified, with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali acknowledging Africa as a key future destination.
“Africa is an area we want to return to. It’s part of our long-term vision,” Domenicali said in a recent interview.
Nigeria’s bid, while still in its early stages, is being viewed as a strategic push to diversify the country’s economy through sports tourism and international events. A successful Abuja Grand Prix could generate significant foreign investment, create jobs, and spotlight Nigeria on the global sporting stage.
To meet Formula 1’s rigorous requirements, the proposed circuit will need to comply with international safety and logistical standards set by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
Experts say Nigeria’s large population, youthful demographics, and growing interest in motorsports could make it a viable host for F1. However, competition from countries like South Africa, with an established motorsport history — could pose a challenge.
Still, optimism is high. The bid has already sparked enthusiasm among fans and stakeholders alike, raising hopes that the roar of F1 engines will soon return to African soil.
The race is on , and Nigeria is in it to win it.
