The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has officially transferred responsibility for resolving National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM card linkage issues to telecommunication service providers. The move comes following the Commission’s complete transition to its upgraded identity verification platform, NINAuth.
In a statement released by NIMC, the Commission noted that with the deployment of the NINAuth platform, telcos now have direct access to identity verification tools that enable them to resolve NIN-related complaints without requiring further intervention from the Commission.
“All NIN-SIM linkage and verification queries should now be directed to mobile network providers,” the statement read. “This shift is aimed at enhancing efficiency and streamlining the process of identity authentication for millions of Nigerians.”
The Commission said this development marks a significant step in improving national identity management while reducing the burden on citizens who have long faced delays and inconsistencies in resolving NIN-related issues.
Digital Backbone Quietly Strengthens
While the spotlight remains on identity management, Nigeria’s digital infrastructure is quietly gaining ground. The National ICT Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB) project has successfully deployed over 5,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable, now spanning 28 states across the federation.
Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, disclosed the milestone during a presentation at the ICTEL Expo 2025 in Lagos. He said the fibre network now connects government institutions, private enterprises, and academic establishments, creating a robust framework for digital communication and services.
“This is a critical part of our digital economy,” Adeyanju said. “Though it may not be highly visible to the public, this infrastructure is silently driving the country’s connectivity and supporting key sectors.”
The fibre optic rollout is expected to enhance service delivery in e-governance, education, health, and private sector operations by improving internet speed, reliability, and access.
Together, NIMC’s identity verification upgrade and the expansion of Nigeria’s fibre network reflect growing momentum in the country’s digital transformation journey — a combination of reforms that experts say could significantly boost national productivity and citizen satisfaction in the long term.
