President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
Adeniyi, whose initial tenure was due to expire on August 31, 2025, will now remain in office until August 31, 2026, subject to further presidential directives.
The extension, announced by the Presidency on Wednesday, is intended to allow the Customs boss to consolidate ongoing reforms and deliver on key strategic initiatives of the Tinubu administration.
According to the statement, the extension will enable Mr. Adeniyi to:
- Advance the modernisation agenda of the Nigeria Customs Service;
- Accelerate the rollout of the National Single Window Project, aimed at streamlining trade processes;
- Oversee Nigeria’s implementation of its obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
President Tinubu commended Adeniyi’s leadership and reaffirmed his confidence in the CGC’s ability to deliver results. The President noted that the decision reflects a commitment to continuity and institutional stability within one of Nigeria’s most critical revenue-generating agencies.
Mr. Adeniyi, appointed in June 2023, has spearheaded several reform efforts, including the digitalisation of customs operations, anti-smuggling enforcement, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration.
Analysts view the extension as a strategic move to sustain momentum in customs reform and strengthen Nigeria’s trade facilitation and border security framework.
Unless otherwise extended, Adeniyi is expected to conclude his service as Comptroller-General of Customs on August 31, 2026.
